12 Days of Foodie Flava – Apple Cider Sangria

Let me just say that my girlfriends and I LOVE sangria and try new ways to make it every chance we get, so our Christmas party was no different. Jumping on Pinterest, as I regularly do, I really wanted something Christmasy and holiday-like; something unlike our signature girls’ weekend sangria that we’ve been drinking for the past 2 or 3 years.

I can’t say that I am or am not really a fan of apple cider. Until I decided to make this sangria, I had never even tasted apple cider, but since I was put in charge of the Friends and Family Christmas party drink this year (& the stipulation was not to make anything too strong) I jumped at the opportunity to again do something new and different.

The measurements seem kinda weird even to me since usually a bottle of wine is what a sangria recipe starts with, but because everyone was bringing a bottle of something and the sangria was just the “ladies’ drink” for the night, I bought a 1.5L bottle of wine to use for the sangria and to stash a little for myself to drink later and stash a little to use to cook with later in the week, I had to actually measure it out this time. I think – based on my measurements – we actually had a bit more than what we would have had if I just used “one bottle of wine,” but feel free to use a standard sized bottle if red wine isn’t your thing.

  • 4C Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 1C Crown Royal Apple
  • 1 bottle champagne
  • 2C apple cider
  • 1/2 Granny Smith apple
  • 1/2 Red Delicious apple

Instructions

  • Cut each apple in half, remove seeds, slice, and place in your pitcher. Pour in wine, Crown Royal, and apple cider and let refrigerate until chilled - at least 4 hours. When ready to serve slowly pour champagne into the pitcher. Use remaining apples as garnish or serve with fruit from the sangria but beware of its potency! Enjoy!
